About this course

Welcome to our course on Intelligent Transport Systems & Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems! In this short introductory course, you’ll learn about the fundamentals of ITS and C-ITS, how to differentiate between them, how to recognise ITS & C-ITS in practice and what C-ITS can do for you.

This two week introductory course, is for anyone who wants to understand the fundamentals of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS). It’s valuable for beginners in the field but is especially geared towards public sector decision makers who are wondering: what are ITS &C-ITS and why are they relevant for me?

This course aims to provide answers to the following questions

  • What is ITS?
  • What is C-ITS?
  • Where can I see C-ITS in operation?
  • What can C-ITS do for me?

You’ll learn

  • To recognise core ITS technologies and functions
  • To define C-ITS, and differentiate between C-ITS & ITS
  • To identify the latest development in ITS/ C-ITS & differentiate between Day 1 & Day 1.5 Services
  • To identify C-ITS in practice through selected best practice case studies

Meet the instructor

Simon Edwards

Simon Edwards

Newcastle University, UK

Simon is a Senior Researcher in ITS in the Transport Operations Research Group. He is involved in much of the Transport Operation Research Group’s Europe-facing ITS research, and has participated in many successful applications for European research funding. He has knowledge of and experience in many different areas of ITS, including cooperative systems, urban mobility, and electro-mobility. Simon's specialist field is Inclusive Mobility, in particular accessibility for disabled and older people. His other skills include the user evaluation processes and assessment of the practical application and acceptance of ITS.
